Cameron Norrie withdraws from Auckland Classic with wrist injury
In a setback for British tennis, top-ranked player Cameron Norrie faces uncertainty ahead of the Australian Open as he withdraws from the ATP Auckland Open due to a right wrist injury.
Despite hopes of competing, Norrie decided to pull out just before his scheduled quarterfinal against Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo.
The Englishman, seeded 19th for the Australian Open, is slated to play Juan Pablo Varillas in the first round. Norrie’s absence from the Auckland Open leaves fans disappointed, especially considering his previous success, reaching the final in the past two years.
Meanwhile, top-seeded American Ben Shelton advanced to the semifinals with a hard-fought victory over Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena. Despite challenges in his serve, Shelton expressed satisfaction with his performance, securing a spot in the semifinals against Japanese-American Taro Daniel.
Daniel, who overcame French qualifier Alexandre Muller in a lengthy match, now faces Tabilo in the semis. Another semifinalist, Arthur Fils of France, advanced when Daniel Altmaier retired during their quarterfinal match.
As the Auckland Open unfolds, attention turns to Norrie’s wrist scans and the impact on his Australian Open campaign, adding an element of uncertainty to the upcoming Grand Slam.
