André Onana: Country Comes First, Responds to Cameroon Critics

André Onana has responded to criticism surrounding his absence in the opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing that his commitment to his country takes precedence over scrutiny.

Cameroon’s goalkeeper André Onana is poised to make a comeback in the lineup for Friday’s crucial Africa Cup of Nations group stage encounter against reigning champions Senegal.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper missed Cameroon’s tournament opener in the Ivory Coast on Monday due to his participation in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Despite flying in on a charter plane overnight, Onana’s delayed arrival in the Ivory Coast just hours before the Group C clash against Guinea sparked controversy among Cameroon supporters.

The decision to prioritize club commitments over the national team’s opening match stirred debate.

In a post-arrival interview, Onana candidly discussed the challenging balance between loyalty to his club and representing his country, particularly for African internationals navigating mid-season departures for continental competitions like the Cup of Nations.

He emphasized his commitment to Cameroon, stating, “It’s like choosing between my father and my mother, but my country comes first, that’s why I’m here.”

Onana’s history with the national team includes turning down a call-up to the 2017 Cup of Nations finals, but he participated in the previous edition two years ago, following a return from a doping ban.

Despite past conflicts with coach Rigobert Song, the goalkeeper is determined to contribute to Cameroon’s success in the ongoing tournament.
