Cameroon Football Federation President Samuel Eto’o has faced rejection of his resignation amid allegations of improper conduct, match-fixing, and corruption.

The executive committee, after evaluating the national team’s Africa Cup of Nations performance, unanimously declined Eto’o’s offer to step down during a meeting in Yaoundé. The committee expressed renewed confidence in his leadership, endorsing his plan for the reconstruction and development of Cameroon football.

The federation’s statement did not disclose other decisions or conclusions from the meeting. Meanwhile, the future of Cameroon coach Rigobert Song remains uncertain after the team’s disappointing Africa Cup campaign, marked by a last-minute win in the group stage and subsequent elimination by Nigeria in the round of 16.

Eto’o, a four-time African Player of the Year, celebrated with the team after the dramatic win over Gambia but has been plagued by corruption allegations.

Recent reports from The Athletic revealed WhatsApp messages, emails, and audio recordings supporting accusations such as match-fixing, abuse of power, and inciting violence.

FIFA’s ethics committee and the Confederation of African Football are reportedly investigating these claims.

The Confederation of African Football was already probing “serious” allegations from Cameroonian football stakeholders against Eto’o, emphasizing his presumed innocence until proven otherwise by a judicial body.

Concerns were also raised in Cameroon regarding Eto’o’s ambassadorial role with a sports betting company, potentially violating institutional codes.

Before Eto’o’s presidency, Cameroon soccer faced numerous issues, including government interference, corruption allegations, and broken promises from soccer leaders.

Eto’o, who played in four World Cups for Cameroon between 1998 and 2014, now navigates a challenging period as the leader of the football federation amidst intensifying scrutiny and investigations into the alleged misconduct surrounding him.
