Rigobert Song asserts that while they hold great respect for Nigerian player Victor Osimhen in the upcoming AFCON 2023 clash, fear will not be a factor for his team.

Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions, led by coach Rigobert Song, are gearing up to face the Super Eagles in the AFCON round of 16 in Abidjan.

Despite acknowledging the threat posed by Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, the reigning CAF Player of the Year, Song emphasizes that respect for Osimhen doesn’t equate to fear. Osimhen, who has scored one goal in three AFCON 2023 games, is a player the Cameroonians are wary of, but Song maintains confidence in his team’s abilities.

According to Song, the key to success lies in maintaining focus, avoiding emotional engagement, and applying their football philosophy and technique.

“Osimhen is a big player,” Song was quoted on uk.sports.yahoo.com.

“We know him and respect him. But respecting him doesn’t mean that we should fear him.”

The two-time AFCON winner believes in approaching the match with confidence, expressing assurance that their desired outcome will follow.

“We are focused to play and avoid engaging in emotions. We must apply our philosophy and technique to win … We cannot be worried about a football game.

“We will approach this match with confidence and the outcome we want will come.”

As the stage is set for the clash between these traditional African football powerhouses, Song’s perspective underscores a balanced respect for the opponent while instilling confidence in his squad. The encounter promises an exciting showdown as both teams vie for advancement in the tournament.
