Carragher has stated that the Man City star deserve more praise that he has gotten as he scored the first goal against Germany.

Speaking with the media Carragher said:  “I was not one of the doubters, I don’t know where they came from.

“I know going into the tournament he hadn’t scored in a tournament for England before, but for the last two years under Gareth Southgate, his goalscoring record is off the scale.

“It’s been the same at Man City for the last three or four years. He didn’t have his best season last season, but he was still getting double figures.

“For a wide player, he was always the go-to figure. I think the year before he got 28 goals. This is an outstanding footballer who should get a lot more praise and he’s questioned far too often.

Sterling has been criticised before going into the tournament but the Pundit believes people now recognize the wingers ability.

“He was questioned going into this tournament, which I couldn’t understand.

“He has to play in this England team because of what he gives them. Not just the goals, but the pace, running in behind, especially if you’ve got Harry Kane who’s coming deeper for the ball.

“You need someone to do that and it had to be Raheem Sterling. I wouldn’t say he’s proved people wrong in this tournament because I don’t think he had anything to prove.

“But I’m glad people are recognising how good a footballer Raheem Sterling is.”
