Celtics’ Jaylen Brown Ejected for the First Time in Career Amidst Controversy
In a surprising turn of events, Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics was ejected for the first time in his NBA career during Friday night’s game against the New York Knicks. The star player expressed his disbelief, stating that the ejection should never have occurred.
The incident unfolded in the fourth quarter when Brown received a technical foul for disputing a call while defending Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley. Subsequently, he was ejected after receiving a second technical while on the bench, leaving both Brown and Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla frustrated and questioning the decision.
Brown, visibly upset, voiced his disappointment, expressing a desire for a more dramatic or eventful ejection rather than one caused by what he deemed an “overemotional ref who had a bad day.” He recounted his confusion, mentioning that he believed his first career ejection would involve a more intense scenario rather than a dispute with a referee.
“To be honest, I’m not sure,” Brown told reporters when asked why he was tossed. “But I wish I would’ve got my money’s worth. I always thought my first career ejection would be something a little more exciting. Maybe a tussle or something, guys get folded up, go to the ground, not some overemotional ref who had a bad day. What I’m most upset about is I should’ve got my f—ing money’s worth.”
Coach Mazzulla echoed Brown’s sentiments, highlighting that he’s witnessed more disrespectful behaviors from players that didn’t result in ejections, raising eyebrows at the officials’ decision-making process.
The crew chief, Mark Lindsay, explained that the initial technical was due to profanity directed at a game official, and the second was for an unsportsmanlike gesture, which Brown contested vehemently, suggesting it was an abuse of power.
Despite the ejection, Brown contributed 17 points to the Celtics’ 133-123 victory, maintaining their perfect 10-0 home record. Additionally, Derrick White scored 30 points, and Kristaps Porzingis, returning after a four-game absence due to a calf injury, added 21 points to the team’s success.
