Derrick Rose defends Killian Hayes after preseason debut: “You’re kind of throwing all these kids into the fire”

Derrick Rose will be the veteran leader of a relatively young Detroit Pistons squad this season. After the first preseason game, the youngest MVP in the history of the league talked on Killian Hayes’ debut.

Rose pointed out that many times the media “throws all these kids into the fire”, as Hayes had seven turnovers in his NBA debut.

“You’re kind of throwing all these kids into the fire,” Rose said. “I get that. Tonight, I told (Hayes), ‘Don’t really worry about how the game went or how you played.’ Of course, because he’s a perfectionist, he’s going to think about it.”

Like his fellow teammates and other players around the league, Hayes did not play competitive basketball for several months.

The seventh overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft recorded five points, four assists and three rebounds in his team’s 90-84 loss against the New York Knicks.

Detroit will host New York again on Sunday as the team is moving towards the start of the 2020/21 regular season.
