Oshoala Departs Barcelona for NWSL’s Bay FC

Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala bids farewell to Barcelona, embarking on a new chapter with NWSL expansion team Bay FC. The prolific forward’s move brings a wealth of experience and goal-scoring prowess to the San Francisco Bay Area-based club ahead of their inaugural NWSL season in 2024.

 

In a major transfer move, Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala has bid farewell to Barcelona and officially joined the NWSL expansion team Bay FC. The announcement, made by both clubs on Thursday, revealed that the 29-year-old forward has signed a contract with the San Francisco Bay Area-based club through 2026, with an option to extend for the 2027 season. Oshoala, a six-time African Player of the Year, brings a wealth of experience and a winning pedigree to Bay FC.

Bay FC’s general manager, Lucy Rushton, expressed excitement about the acquisition, highlighting Oshoala’s top-class mentality, pace, and technical ability. She noted the striker’s ability to lead the line and create opportunities for her teammates. Oshoala, who joined Barcelona in 2019 from Dalian Quanjian in China, leaves behind a remarkable legacy with the Catalan giants, winning four Liga F titles, two UEFA Women’s Champions Leagues, and three Copas de la Reina.

In an emotional Instagram post, Oshoala thanked Barcelona for her time with the club, acknowledging the privilege of representing the prestigious team. She expressed gratitude for the relationships built with teammates, coaches, staff, and fans, referring to them as her family. With 107 goals in 149 appearances, Oshoala leaves Barcelona as the club’s fourth-highest goalscorer in history.

Bay FC, set to debut in the NWSL in 2024, will share a stadium with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer. Oshoala’s arrival adds a potent attacking force to the expansion team as they embark on their inaugural season in the league.
