Steve Kerr announced as next Olympic men’s coach.

Golden state warrior coach Steve Kerr will lead the U.S. men basketball team to the Olympics if the qualify.

Golden State Warrior coach Steve Kerr has been announced formally as the next coach of the U.S. men’s team on Monday in San Francisco.

Kerr would be taking over for Popovich and leading the American’s basketball team into the 2023 Basketball World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics if they qualify. Kerr’s assistant coaches will be Miami coach Erik Spoelstra, Phoenix coach Monty Williams and Gonzaga coach Mark Few.

Kerr on Monday called it a “dream job,” admitting even he was a little surprised that he got the call to be Team USA’s coach.

“It was a surprise, to be honest with you,” Kerr said during Monday’s news conference. “Even though we spent the whole summer together in Tokyo … it was just a wonderful experience to be part of USA Basketball. But you just don’t stop and think, ‘Oh, maybe I’ll be the head coach.’

“It’s not something you even dream about. So you don’t even afford yourself that time and say, ‘I wonder if …’ You just put your head down, you work — when this call came, it gave me chills. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime, and I can’t wait to work with all these guys.”

Williams has been an assistant before, under former U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski. Spoelstra and Few were involved in coaching the U.S. select team, which was assembled to practice against the Olympic team, this past summer.

One of the players both Kerr and Hill are hoping to work with is Golden State Warriors star guard Stephen Curry.

The 33 years old has participated in Team USA’s program through the years, but has yet to play in the Olympics. Curry spoke openly about wanting to play in Tokyo during the 2020 Games, before they were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Kerr and Hill are hopeful that Curry will decide to play in Paris in 2024, Kerr said it was too early to know whether Curry would play or not.

“We’ll see,” Kerr said. “These things are very fluid. I’ve learned a lot over the last couple years working with Pop and Sean [Ford] and Jerry [Colangelo], you just sort of have to let things unfold because every player’s circumstances change constantly. And if Steph is healthy and wants to play, I’m pretty sure I could convince Grant and Sean to put him on the roster.”

“I thought you had a scoop or something,” Hill interjected.

“It would be wonderful,” Kerr said. “But you just never know how this thing is going to play out. There’s still a lot of time between now and then.”

Kerr has three NBA titles as coach of the Warriors, won five more as a player, was part of the staff that won gold at the Tokyo Games and won a senior-level gold medal for USA Basketball as a player in the 1986 World Cup.

“His basketball acumen, his ability to connect with people, I think his understanding and respect of the international game, along with some other factors, certainly played a role in this process,” Hill said in an interview with The Associated Press about the selection process.

“As I talked to people and went through consideration, he was the perfect fit. His wealth of experiences, including that on the international stage, I think really differentiated him.”

Hill said he and Kerr have already had talks on how to approach the next 2½ years in terms of building a roster, putting their own touches on the program and still maintaining the best of what has delivered results for the U.S. in the past.

“I don’t think you want to totally depart from what’s worked,” Hill said. “But I also think there’s an opportunity to press the reset button on some things and look for opportunities to improve the experience and ultimately, the goal for everyone involved.

“Look at this staff and they’ve all been a part of USA Basketball. Monty Williams was with Coach K’s last squad. Erik Spoelstra and Mark Few were part of this past select team. So it’s something that can be looked upon as a continuation.”
