Emery: We can’t just sit back; we need to be demanding
Unai Emery insists his side won’t just sit back when they meet Bayern Munich in the return leg as he knows how dangerous the German club can be.
Villareal manager Unai Emery stated that his team will not sit back but they will be demanding following their victory over Bayern Munich.
The Spanish side were great against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League after a 1-0 win in Spain.
Emery side were impressive in the game as they created enough chances in the match but only found the back of the net once.
Speaking to the media after their victory in the Champions League first leg Emery claims his side are ready to face any team and will try their best to reach the semi-final of the tournament.
“We’ve been on a trajectory since last season of where we want to be and for it to not be something purely anecdotal. That competitive part is being picked up by the team. We are having a very nice journey and, at the same time, very demanding, but that gives us a lot of satisfaction and recognition for everyone.
“The team’s response is that we are here to compete and try to reach the semi-finals against one of the favourites. We are not just going to sit back and celebrate what we have achieved, we have to be demanding.”
Bayern Munich are a very strong team and have done incredibly well in return legs in the Champions League competition.
Emery believes he knows the harm Bayern Munich can cause but insists they will use their best resources to make the game go their way in the return leg.
“We know that Bayern are a very good team and we will try to use our best resources to make the game shine and be protagonists as a team. This kind of game you can win or you can lose. They were at a good level and we worked hard to stop them from scoring.”
Emery also stated that seeing the fans on their arrival gave him the feeling of the responsibility to make them proud.
“When we came on the bus and saw the excitement of the fans, we felt the responsibility to make them experience a special moment with us. Football is a feeling, beyond professionalism, and making so many people happy is wonderful. Before the game I thought about whether we could make them proud.”
