Draymond Green Suspended for Five Games
Draymond Green Suspended for Five Games by NBA Following On-Court Altercation
The NBA announced a five-game suspension without pay for Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green in response to his involvement in an altercation during Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Green, along with two other players, was ejected after an on-court fight, with the league citing his action of “forcibly grabbing” Rudy Gobert around the neck in an “unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner.”
NBA executive vice president Joe Dumars underscored Green’s history of unsportsmanlike behavior as a contributing factor in determining the length of the suspension.
Golden State Warriors’ forward Draymond Green is set to miss a series of crucial matchups following a five-game suspension imposed by the NBA. The suspension, amounting to a loss of $769,970 in earnings, will see Green absent for games against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, and the San Antonio Spurs—a pivotal game as part of the in-season tournament.
This marks Green’s fifth career suspension, with his recent altercation in Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves contributing to the league’s decision. Notably, Green’s past suspensions include a pivotal absence in Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals and a suspension last season for an incident involving Kings center Domantas Sabonis.
The altercation unfolded just over a minute into the game as Jaden McDaniels and Klay Thompson became entangled, escalating into a physical confrontation. Thompson and McDaniels received technical fouls, while Green’s action of placing Rudy Gobert in a headlock resulted in a flagrant foul 2. Despite efforts from coaches and players to separate the players, tensions ran high on the court.
Post-game, Gobert expressed dissatisfaction with the fine following the Timberwolves’ game against the Suns, underscoring the fallout from Tuesday’s intense on-court clash.
“Every situation is different, but to me, that was more than just a reaction. That was a personal attack,” Gobert said. “Me being fined when I was being a peacemaker, and I chose to keep my hands up while I was being assaulted, it’s shameful. Shameful. And I’m going to appeal that fine.”
The animosity between Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green and Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert resurfaced, adding another chapter to their contentious history. Green’s past remarks and altercations with Gobert have amplified the intensity of their on-court clashes.
In 2019, Green mocked Gobert’s emotional reaction to missing out on an All-Star selection, reigniting the feud during a recent TNT broadcast by distancing himself from the French center. The tension escalated further when Green punched former teammate Jordan Poole during last season’s training camp, prompting a cryptic tweet from Gobert referencing “insecurity” in response to the incident.
The spat continued as Green retaliated against Gobert, criticizing his playing style as “softer” after Gobert clashed with Kyle Anderson from the Timberwolves in a separate game.
This recent clash marks Green’s second ejection this season, with the first occurring during the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers after receiving two technical fouls. The history of on-court incidents between Green and Gobert continues to highlight the ongoing friction between the two NBA stars.
