Xavi Voices Frustration, Deems Barcelona Job ‘Cruel and Unpleasant’
Xavi Hernández, expresses a sense of feeling unvalued and describes the managerial role at the club as “cruel and unpleasant.” Despite securing a LaLiga title last season, Xavi, frustrated with ongoing criticism, announced his departure, citing the constant pressure and demanding environment.
Barcelona’s outgoing coach, Xavi Hernández, expressed frustration with what he perceives as insufficient appreciation for his work at the club, claiming that succeeding in the role is “impossible.”
Despite leading Barcelona to a LaLiga title last season, the team has struggled in the current campaign, facing early exits from the Spanish Supercopa and the Copa del Rey while trailing league leaders Girona by 11 points.
Xavi described the coaching role as “cruel and unpleasant,” emphasizing the constant pressure and criticism. He highlighted the challenges faced since taking over in 2021 amid the club’s difficult period.
The coach, who announced his departure despite having a contract until 2025, voiced a sentiment of not being valued, regardless of his achievements.
Acknowledging President Joan Laporta’s support, Xavi believes the demanding environment and expectations surrounding the club contribute to the lack of recognition. He anticipates that his successor will encounter similar challenges and advised them to stay true to themselves.
Despite the strain, Xavi did not rule out a potential return to Barcelona in the future, expressing his commitment to the club.
He guided Barcelona from ninth to second place in his first season, securing a LaLiga title the following year. However, recent losses to Girona, Real Madrid, Athletic Club, and Villarreal increased pressure on Xavi.
In response to Xavi’s announcement, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, a Barça legend, emphasized the unparalleled pressure associated with managing the club. Guardiola, who succeeded as both player and manager at Barcelona, highlighted the intensity of the scrutiny, describing it as “one thousand times higher and tougher” than any role in the Premier League.
As Xavi hopes his departure will spur a positive reaction from the team, Barcelona faces the challenge of overcoming an 11-point deficit in the league and progressing in the Champions League against Napoli in the round of 16.
