Nigerian Ex Football player Michael Eneramo Passes Away After On-Field Collapse
Ex Super Eagles forward Michael Eneramo collapsed and died on the field during a friendly match in Kaduna on Friday morning.
According to reports from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Eneramo appeared to have suffered a cardiac arrest just five minutes into the second half of the game, which was played in the Ungwan Yelwa area of Kaduna. He had successfully played through the entire first half of the match before the tragic incident occurred.
The General Secretary of the NFF, Mohammed Sanusi, expressed deep shock over the news, describing the event as devastating and stating that he was short of words. Eneramo was a well-known figure in Nigerian sports, having made 10 appearances for the senior national team, the Super Eagles.
Eneramo’s journey to the national team was unique. At one point, he had the opportunity to play for Tunisia, where he had become a household name due to his incredible goal-scoring record in their domestic league. However, he turned down the chance to take up Tunisian citizenship, choosing instead to represent his fatherland, Nigeria. He made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2009 against Jamaica and scored his first international goal just three months later in a game against Ireland.
Before his retirement, Eneramo was a terror to defenders, especially during his time with the Tunisian giants, Espérance Sportive de Tunis. His physical strength and power on the ball earned him the nickname “The Tank” from the fans. He was instrumental in helping the club win several trophies and remains one of the most respected foreign players to ever play in the Tunisian league.
Beyond North Africa, Eneramo also enjoyed a successful career in Europe, particularly in Turkey. He played for several top clubs including Sivasspor, Beşiktaş, and İstanbul Başakşehir. His death at the age of 40 is a massive blow to the football world, and tributes have started pouring in from former teammates and fans who remember his dedication and passion for the game.
