Sterling’s only goal gave Manchester City three points in a hard-fought game against Southampton.
Manchester City’s winger Raheem Sterling only goal handed them three points in a hard-fought game against Southampton in the Premier league as Pep Guardiola’s side move to sixth in the League table.
The English man calmly converted from 12-yards after he was picked out by Kevin De Bruyne’s ball across goal in the 16th minute to end City’s two-match winless run.
“It was a tough one, we know how difficult it’s been in the last few weeks,” Sterling stated.
“But we are pleased to get three points
“We had a word with ourselves, to dig deep and find something within when we need to. We are a top team and we need to be competing every game.
“One of the things that’s let us down in the last few weeks is our aggressiveness. We are usually very aggressive – in the press or on the ball – and we are at our best when we are on the front foot.
Guardiola’s side were made to work hard for victory against Southampton, where the home side penalty appeal for a Sterling handball disallowed by VAR, but another solid defensive display provided the platform for a hard-fought victory against a bright Southampton team.
Southampton started well by displaying an attack intent you’d expect from a team who had lost just once in 11 league games.
Southampton might have felt unfortunate to go in behind at the break, but in the second half City were superior in attack and created enough chances in the game.
City are now unbeaten in eight games in all competition and are now fifth in the Premier League, ahead of the remaining games this weekend.
