Xabi Alonso Handed the Reins at Chelsea on Four-Year Deal
Former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss tasked with stabilizing Stamford Bridge after FA Cup heartbreak and a turbulent season of managerial upheaval.
Chelsea Football Club has officially appointed Xabi Alonso as its new manager, the Premier League club announced on Sunday. The 44-year-old Spaniard has agreed to a four-year contract and is scheduled to officially assume his duties at Stamford Bridge on July 1.
The high-profile appointment comes at a critical juncture for the West London club, just a day after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final mathematically guaranteed a trophyless campaign. Alonso, who has been out of work since a turbulent seven-month stint at Real Madrid ended in January, was identified by the Chelsea board as their primary target to steer the club out of a prolonged period of instability.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said in an official statement. “From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”
The former Spain international inherits a talented but highly disjointed squad that has seen significant managerial churn. Alonso becomes the fifth permanent managerial appointment under the BlueCo ownership structure, following the recent exits of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, the latter being dismissed just 106 days into a long-term contract last month.
While the club considered other candidates—including Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham’s Marco Silva—negotiations with Alonso progressed rapidly over the past week.
Alonso earned a reputation as one of the world’s most progressive young tacticians after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to a historic, unbeaten Bundesliga title and German Cup double in 2024. Though his subsequent spell at the Santiago Bernabéu was cut short amid reported dressing room disharmony, Chelsea’s hierarchy expressed absolute confidence in his tactical vision and leadership qualities.
“His appointment reflects the club’s belief in his broad set of experiences, coaching quality and game model, leadership attributes, character and integrity,” the club’s statement read.
The task awaiting Alonso in London is formidable. Despite a £2 billion layout on player recruitment over the last four years, Chelsea currently sits ninth in the Premier League and looks highly likely to miss out on European football entirely next season.
Furthermore, recent financial disclosures highlighted record pre-tax losses of $350 million, triggering strict financial sustainability pressures that Alonso must navigate while attempting to cultivate a winning culture.
Interim coach Calum McFarlane will remain on the touchline for Chelsea’s final two matches of the season against Tottenham and Sunderland, before stepping aside to allow the Xabi Alonso era to officially begin this summer.
