Chelsea Escapes Points Deduction But Lands Heavy Fine
Chelsea Hit with £10.75m Fine and Suspended Transfer Ban Over Historical Breaches
Chelsea FC has avoided a points deduction but must pay a heavy £10.75 million fine after the Premier League found the club guilty of breaking financial rules during the Roman Abramovich era. The league also hit the club with a suspended one-year transfer ban and an immediate nine-month ban on signing academy players.
The trouble started when the new owners, led by Todd Boehly, took over in 2022 and found major discrepancies in the club’s old accounts. They discovered that between 2011 and 2018, undisclosed payments totaling over £47 million were made to players, unlicensed agents, and other parties to help secure big transfers like Eden Hazard, Willian, and Samuel Eto’o. These payments were made through companies linked to Abramovich and were never reported in the official financial records.
Instead of hiding the discovery, the new management decided to report the findings to the football authorities immediately. This proactive self-reporting and exceptional cooperation is exactly why the Premier League decided not to take points away from the team. The league also found that even if Chelsea had recorded the money properly back then, they still would not have broken the spending limits known as Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), so they did not gain an unfair advantage over other teams on the pitch.
However, the club did not escape without a significant penalty. The £10.75 million fine is a massive financial hit, and the nine-month academy ban means they cannot recruit any new young stars for a long period. The one-year transfer ban is currently “suspended,” which means it will only be activated if the club breaks the rules again in the future. Chelsea stated they have treated the matter with the utmost seriousness to ensure the club now operates with full transparency. While the senior team can continue their season without a drop in the standings, the club’s bank account and youth department have definitely felt the impact of this investigation.
