Eagles Part Ways with Demoted Defensive Coordinator Sean Desai

The Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly terminated the contract of defensive coordinator Sean Desai, who was demoted mid-season following defensive struggles, signaling a significant change in the team’s coaching staff.

The Philadelphia Eagles have parted ways with defensive coordinator Sean Desai, a decision fueled by the team’s defensive struggles during the 2023 season.

Initially hired in February to replace Jonathan Gannon, who moved on to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Desai faced adversity after blowout losses to the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys in early December.

In response, Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni demoted Desai in favor of Matt Patricia.

However, the shift to Patricia did not bring the desired improvements. The defense continued to struggle, conceding an average of 30 points per game over the final four matches of the season, culminating in a playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Throughout the regular season, the Eagles allowed the third-highest points per game (25.2) and struggled significantly in red zone and third-down defense, ranking 30th in the league. Their pass defense also proved problematic, permitting the second-highest number of passing touchdowns (35).

Desai, who previously worked with the Chicago Bears from 2013 to 2021, where he rose through the ranks to become defensive coordinator, had a brief stint with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 before joining the Eagles.

The decision to part ways with Desai reflects the team’s commitment to addressing defensive deficiencies and seeking a fresh direction for the upcoming season.
