Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says they were punished by German team RB Leipzig in their final Champions League group stage match.

Guardiola’s side suffers a 2-1 defeat to the German side in their last match after their defender Kyle Walker saw a red card.

Speaking with the media after the game Guardiola hails Leipzig as he admitted that they were a good team.

“We played better in the second half, (we were) more aggressive, we played to win the game and we lost it so congrats to Leipzig,” Guardiola said.

“First half we lacked rhythm, we had problems to contact, and they had a really good team, we knew it before the group stage, but the second half was much better.

“But, unfortunately, we were punished with one or two mistakes.

“We made an incredible group stage. We qualified with a game left in a top group, so we are more than satisfied with the performance in every single game.

“In February hopefully we can arrive in the best condition possible.”

And asked whether he was concerned that is side hadn’t kept a clean sheet in their six group games, the manager pointed to the way they had navigated a tough group also featuring Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge.

“One never knows, sometimes we concede goals but after score more,” Guardiola added.

“Of course, it’s better to not concede goals, but the way we played all the games we played much better than the opponent except today in the first half.

“In general, we made an incredible group stage.”
