81-Year-Old Man Killed; Driver Cooperates with Authorities
Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martínez has been involved in a tragic traffic collision that resulted in the death of an 81-year-old man, according to reports from Italian media.
The 27-year-old Spaniard was driving to the club’s training facility in Appiano Gentile when the incident occurred on Tuesday morning at around 9:40 a.m. local time in Fenegro, near Como. Martínez’s vehicle struck the elderly man, who was in an electric wheelchair on Via Bergamo.
Initial investigations suggest the victim may have suffered a medical episode moments before the impact, leaving him unable to move from the road.
Martínez reportedly stopped immediately to provide first aid, but despite the arrival of an ambulance and air ambulance, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martínez, unharmed but deeply shaken, cooperated fully with authorities, and police have opened a routine inquiry to determine the exact circumstances. No charges have been filed, and early reports indicate no intent or wrongdoing on the driver’s part.
The accident has prompted Inter Milan to cancel manager Cristian Chivu’s scheduled press conference as a mark of respect. Martínez, Inter’s second-choice keeper behind Yann Sommer, joined from Genoa in 2024 and has made 12 appearances, keeping seven clean sheets.
His last outing was a 2-1 win over Sassuolo. The club has not issued an official statement, but the incident has cast a shadow over preparations for Wednesday’s Serie A match against Fiorentina at San Siro.
This heartbreaking event serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life, even for those in the spotlight. Martínez’s cooperation with the Carabinieri continues as the probe unfolds, with no further details released at this time.
