Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane Insists United Need “Bigger and Better” Manager Despite Carrick’s Perfect Start.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has warned that the club should not get carried away after interim boss Michael Carrick masterminded back-to-back wins over Manchester City and Arsenal. Despite the perfect start to his reign, Keane is adamant that the former midfielder is not the right man to lead the club permanently.

Carrick was appointed to steady the ship until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim was sacked in early January. Since stepping in, he has transformed the mood at Old Trafford, leading United to a massive victory in the Manchester derby before ending Arsenal’s unbeaten home record on Sunday. The results have even sparked whispers of a late title charge, but Keane remains totally unconvinced.

“Two great performances but anyone can win two games,” Keane told Sky Sports. He made it clear that even a perfect run wouldn’t change his mind about the long-term appointment. “If United win every game until the end of the season, I still wouldn’t be giving him the job. I still would not be convinced he’s the man for the job. Absolutely not.”

For Keane, the issue isn’t Carrick’s tactical ability, but the sheer scale of the task at United. He believes the club needs a heavy hitter to compete for the biggest trophies. “Are we going to sit here and believe Michael Carrick can get United winning league titles? It’s not enough for me,” he added, insisting the club needs a “bigger and better manager” to return to their former glory.

However, the Irishman did admit that Carrick has brought a much-needed “swagger and calmness” back to the squad. He noted that the scenes at the Emirates, with the fans celebrating a 3-2 win, felt “a bit like the old days” of United’s dominance. While the fans are enjoying the ride, Keane is clearly looking for a more established name to take the wheel next season.
