Manchester City’s trial over 115 alleged financial breaches begins Monday, with potential consequences including fines, points deductions, or even relegation, casting uncertainty over the club’s recent successes.

The independent hearing into Manchester City’s alleged 115 breaches of Premier League financial regulations is set to begin on Monday, with British media dubbing it the “sports trial of the century.”

The hearing is expected to last for around two months, with a final verdict, including any appeal, anticipated by the end of the 2024-25 season.

The charges, which date back to the period between 2009 and 2018, were referred to an independent commission in February 2023. Manchester City, who have been dominant in English football with four consecutive league titles, have consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The potential consequences, should they be found guilty, range from substantial fines and points deductions to even relegation from the Premier League.

City’s success since their 2008 takeover by Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group has been immense, amassing eight Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and various domestic and international accolades.

However, a guilty verdict could cast a shadow over this period of unprecedented achievement.

The charges against the club include the failure to provide accurate financial information, improper disclosure of player and manager remuneration, and breaches of both Premier League and UEFA financial fair play regulations.

Manchester City were previously embroiled in controversy in 2020 when UEFA banned them from the Champions League for two years over similar financial infringements, but they successfully appealed that decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

With the hearing set to be held privately, its extended duration could impact Manchester City’s ongoing pursuit of a fifth consecutive Premier League title, while any potential appeal might prolong the process into the summer of 2025.

The trial follows recent points deductions for Everton and Nottingham Forest due to breaches of Profit and Sustainability rules, though Leicester City successfully avoided a similar fate through an appeal.

The outcome of the trial will have  implications not only for Manchester City but also for the competitive integrity of the Premier League.
