Max Dowman Makes History as Arsenal Crush Everton
The “wonderkid” becomes the youngest scorer in Premier League history to put Gunners extend points
If you think you’ve seen it all in football, then you haven’t heard about what happened at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. While big stars like Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz were fighting hard to break down a stubborn Everton defense, it was a 16-year-old schoolboy, Max Dowman, who stole the entire show and wrote his name in the history books.
Arsenal won the game 2-0, but the highlight of the match was Dowman’s record-breaking goal in stoppage time. The young winger, who is just 16 years and 73 days old, did something that left the whole stadium shouting.
With Everton trailing 1-0 after Viktor Gyökeres finally scored in the 89th minute, the Toffees’ goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, ran all the way to the Arsenal box for a corner kick, desperate to find an equalizer. Arsenal cleared the ball, and it fell to young Dowman midway in his own half.
The boy didn’t panic. He dribbled past two Everton players like they were not there, looked up, and saw an empty net waiting for him at the other end. He raced clear from the halfway line, unchallenged, and calmly tapped the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
By scoring that goal, Dowman broke a long-standing record held by former Everton player James Vaughan, who was 16 years and 270 days old when he scored back in 2005. To put this in perspective, Dowman is still a secondary school student. Because of Premier League rules for minors, he even has to change into his kit in a separate locker room from his senior teammates!
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was full of smiles after the game, admitting he had a “gut feeling” about the boy. “It was a phenomenal moment,” Arteta said. “He just plays so naturally. He isn’t scared of the occasion or the opponent. I told him: ‘Go and do your thing and win us the game,’ and he delivered.”
Dowman didn’t just score; he changed the whole energy of the game. Before his goal, he provided the crucial cross that led to Gyökeres’ opening goal. Arteta added, “To do that at that age, with this pressure, it is just not normal.”
This victory is massive for Arsenal. They are now 10 points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table. Even though City has two games in hand, the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side is now “plenty.”
Arsenal fans are starting to believe that this could finally be the year they win their first Premier League title in 22 years. With young talents like Max Dowman coming through, the future at the Emirates is looking very bright indeed.
