In a thrilling showdown at the Australian Open 2024, Daniil Medvedev displayed his Grand Slam prowess by overcoming Hubert Hurkacz in a gripping quarter-final clash in Melbourne.

 

In a gripping quarter-final clash at the Australian Open, Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev showcased his Grand Slam experience by triumphing over Polish ninth seed Hubert Hurkacz in a five-set battle.

Medvedev, a two-time Australian Open finalist, secured his place in the semi-finals with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory, marking the ninth major quarter-final of his career.

Despite a valiant effort from Hurkacz, who fought back to level the match, Medvedev’s resilience and strategic prowess prevailed.

The Russian, aiming for his second major title after clinching the 2021 US Open, expressed the toll the intense battle took on him, stating, “I feel a bit destroyed right now.”

Medvedev’s journey to the semi-finals sets the stage for a potential third shot at the Australian Open title.

Having previously been the runner-up in 2021 and 2022, he brings a wealth of experience to the tournament. The Russian will face either Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.

The match featured a captivating duel between Medvedev’s exceptional returning skills and Hurkacz’s powerful serves.

Medvedev seized an early advantage by breaking Hurkacz’s serve but faced a spirited comeback in the second set. The contest ultimately reached a climax in the fifth set, with Medvedev securing victory after a tense battle that lasted just under four hours.
