Mohamed Salah Eyes Long Career, Keeps Saudi Options Open Post-Liverpool Deal

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has shared an optimistic outlook on his future, suggesting he could play until 39 or 40, despite uncertainty beyond his newly signed two-year contract extension, set to expire in 2027.

Speaking to Egyptian television channel ON Sports in an interview conducted before Monday’s tragic events at Liverpool’s victory parade, the 33-year-old Egypt international reflected on his career trajectory.

Salah ended months of speculation last month by committing to Liverpool, avoiding a potential move to the Saudi Pro League. A £150m bid from Al-Ittihad in September 2023 was rejected, but Salah admitted, “I thought it was a good opportunity. My contract was up at Liverpool and I would have gone to Saudi but we finalised the deal with Liverpool.”

He maintains contact with Saudi clubs, noting, “I still have a good relationship with them and I always stay in contact with them. Yes, we were talking to each other.”

While content at Anfield for the next two years, Salah remains open-ended about his long-term plans. “I don’t know what is going to happen but I am happy here in Liverpool… Then I will see what I will do next,” he said, adding that he would retire if he loses his passion.

“I will stop playing when I have that feeling but if you ask me for my opinion, I think I can play until the age of 39 or 40… I have achieved a lot of things.”
