It’s really a sad story, hearing how an ambitious athlete in Rebecca Cheptegei who hails from Uganda, who strive and brought glory to her country lost her life cruelly in the hands of her lover.

The promising life of a rising start cut short after a brutal domestic violence incident. Her passing has shocked both the sports world and East African communities, once again highlighting the urgent issue of gender-based violence.

Who is Rebecca Cheptegei?

Rebecca Cheptegei was an athlete who hails from Uganda. She held the national marathon record and was a world champion in mountain running. Cheptegei represented Uganda in multiple global competitions, including the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

What her Rebecca Cheptegei accomplishments?

Rebecca Cheptegei had a great career as an Ugandan long-distance athlete, she thrived in multiple tournaments since 2010. She competed in World Cross Country Championships, World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, earning national marathon record with a time of 2:22:47 in 2022. She claimed victories in various international races, including the 2022 Padova Marathon and the World Mountain Running Championship. Cheptegei also represented Uganda in the 2024 Summer Olympics, finishing 44th in the women’s marathon. Her consistent top finishes across multiple disciplines highlight her talent and perseverance.

 

How did she die?

Rebecca Cheptegei died in Kenya after being set on fire by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, following a domestic violence. This incident occurred in  her home at Trans-Nzoia, where she suffered severe burns on her body. Despite the effort of the  medical practitioners, she died in hospital due to organ failure. This horrific event happened shortly after she participated in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her death is a wake up calls for action against domestic violence.

 

Rebecca Cheptegei’s  accomplishments on the global stage made her a source of pride for Uganda, and her untimely passing is a great loss for her country.

Her death cut short the promising career she had and also shed more light on the issue of gender-based violence.
