Ruben Amorim Jokes About Ratcliffe’s “New Contract” Offer Amid United’s Tough Start
Man United Boss Reveals Supportive Talks with Co-Owner as Pressure Mounts
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has lightened the mood with a humorous take on his recent meeting with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, joking that the billionaire offered him a new contract during Thursday’s discussions at Carrington. The quip comes amid a rocky start to the season for United, who sit 14th with four points from four games, including a 3-0 derby loss to Manchester City and a humiliating Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town.
Ratcliffe, who arrived by helicopter for planned talks, met with Amorim to address the team’s form and underlying issues, as first reported by The Athletic. The 40-year-old Portuguese coach, under contract until 2027, appreciated the gesture of support. “New contract, he was offering me a new contract!” Amorim quipped during Friday’s press conference. “No, it was normal things just to show the support, explain it’s a long season. This is a club with more pressure maybe than any in the world.”
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag last November, has won eight of 31 Premier League games, with a win ratio of just 26%—the lowest since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Last season’s 15th-place finish and Europa League final loss to Tottenham intensified scrutiny, but Ratcliffe’s visit signals continued backing. In March, the INEOS chief told The Times he “really likes” Amorim, describing him as “thoughtful” and affirming his belief in the project despite challenges.
The meeting also involved chief executive Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox, focusing on squad dynamics and long-term strategy. Amorim acknowledged the pressure, reflecting on his past criticism of United’s play: “Last year I was very critical… Now I think we are playing well until the boxes. We need to be more clinical.” With £200m spent on attackers like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško—none yet scoring—Amorim emphasized patience: “We are in a better place compared to last year but we need to win.”
United face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday, a must-win to ease concerns. Ratcliffe’s presence at the derby underscores his hands-on approach, having missed the women’s Champions League qualifier but attended key fixtures. Fans hope this visit marks a turning point, echoing Amorim’s optimism for a “long season.” As the pressure cooker that is Old Trafford simmers, the coach’s humor hints at resilience—though results will ultimately speak loudest.
