Ancelotti name first Champions League objective

Carlo Ancelotti side top the Group F of the Champions League but the Italian name their first priority of the prestigious league.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has named the first objective of their Champions League campaign as they prepare for the second leg in the group stage.

The Spanish side will play on an away ground against Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk, a team affected by the war.

Real Madrid defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in the first leg of the Champions League to top the group F table.

Speaking ahead of the match against the Ukrainian side Ancelotti said their first objective is to put the group game to bed by winning the game away from home.

“The challenge for us is to make sure the players recovery properly and we then assess whether they’re tired.

“We’ve got the chance to, and will be looking to put the group stage to bed. That’ll be important for us.

“Getting out of the group stage is our first objective of the season and the sooner we do that, the better. That can help to give you more energy for the league season”.

Having his say on the situation of Shakhtar Donetsk, who is affected by the war, Ancelotti said:  “I spoke to Jovićević in the first leg. They are struggling to go about their work and we feel for them and have real respect for them. Having the desire to play with those challenges means a lot for them and they want to give a good account of themselves as a club and Ukrainian people who are suffering.”
