Antony Breaks Down in Tears as Emotional Manchester United Exit Leads to Real Betis Return
Brazilian Winger Completes Permanent Move After Challenging Stint at Old Trafford
An emotional Antony fought back tears while reflecting on the end of his Manchester United tenure as he finalized his permanent transfer to Real Betis. The move, briefly stalled on Friday, was sealed just before Monday’s transfer deadline, with clubs agreeing on a fixed €22m (£19m) fee plus €3m (£2.6m) in potential bonuses, alongside United retaining 50% of any future transfer. After a successful loan spell at Betis last season—scoring nine goals in 26 games and aiding their UEFA Conference League final run—the LaLiga side opted to make his return permanent.
Antony, omitted from Rúben Amorim’s preseason squad and training separately at Carrington, expressed relief and gratitude during his Tuesday presentation. “Only my family knows how hard it was to be there… Training separately. But I knew this incredible moment was coming,” he said, wiping away tears. “I was afraid it wouldn’t happen, but I waited because I had so much faith.” The 25-year-old, who had two years left on his £81m Ajax contract, left United without additional payments from the club, ending a three-year spell with 96 appearances and 12 goals, far below expectations for their second-most expensive signing.
His struggles at United contrasted with the warmth he found in Seville. “What a difference! Seville is more beautiful than Manchester,” Antony remarked. “I spent over 40 days in a hotel; it was very hard, but everyone knew I wanted to return to Betis… I had trouble sleeping after seeing so much love from the fans.” Betis fans greeted him at 2 a.m., underscoring the affection that swayed his decision. “Being cared about is very important… It was always my first choice,” he added, eager to achieve more in a city and club he loves.
