Manuel Pellegrini Backs Antony’s ‘Revenge’ Mission Ahead of Conference League Final

Real Betis head coach Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that Manchester United loanee Antony is driven by a desire for “revenge” as he aims to reclaim his career in the UEFA Conference League final against Chelsea today, Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The 25-year-old winger, who joined Betis on a six-month loan in January, has revitalized his form in Seville, scoring nine goals in 25 appearances, including crucial strikes in both legs of the 4-3 semi-final win over Fiorentina.

Antony’s move to Betis followed a challenging stint at Manchester United, where he struggled to justify his £87m transfer fee from Ajax in 2022.

The Brazilian recently admitted to Brazilian media that he went “days without eating” during his lowest moments at Old Trafford.

Now, with Betis finishing sixth in La Liga and reaching their first European final, Pellegrini praised Antony’s resurgence. “I spoke with him before he came to Betis,” Pellegrini said.

“He told me that he was not playing because he was not happy. But he has a lot of complaints about what he has done. He wants revenge. I think he did it the way we know he can do it.”

With Antony’s loan nearing its end, United have reportedly made him available for a permanent transfer, likely at a significant loss. Atletico Madrid and Juventus are said to be in the race, while Betis is keen to secure him long-term.

Pellegrini remains confident in Antony’s potential, adding, “It is not easy for you to pay €100 million for a player. Antony is a very good player. I am absolutely sure that this is a huge time for him to continue improving his career.”
