Congo DR captain Chancel Mbemba faces a disturbing wave of online racist abuse following his team’s Africa Cup clash with Morocco, highlighting the persistent issue of racism in football’s online spaces.

Congo DR’s football captain, Chancel Mbemba, faced a barrage of racist abuse on social media following his team’s 1-1 draw against Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations. Users targeted Mbemba’s Instagram with monkey and gorilla emojis and racist comments.

The 29-year-old, who plays for Marseille, had a heated exchange with Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, leading to a melee between both teams.

After the match, Regragui approached Mbemba, who was on his knees in a personal moment of thanks. Mbemba initially responded with a friendly gesture, but Regragui continued talking, prompting Mbemba to pull away, suggesting later that he had been insulted.

Mbemba expressed his shock at hearing certain words from the coach and opted to keep his silence.

The incident underscores the persistent issue of racism in football, both on and off the field. The racial abuse on social media highlights the toxic environment players face.

Mbemba’s restraint and decision to address the issue through silence speak to the challenges players of color encounter.

Regragui’s alleged insult adds another layer to the controversy, raising questions about sportsmanship and respect. As the incident unfolded, players and officials from both teams became involved, escalating tensions.

The lack of an immediate reaction from Regragui leaves room for speculation and calls for accountability.

The incident underscores the need for continued efforts to combat racism in football and emphasizes the importance of fostering an inclusive and respectful sporting environment.
