The struggle of Manchester United have brought series of discussion among club loves as the decline has hit the club strongly, Former player Cristiano Ronaldo gave his own advice on how the club should embrace the club Legend who understand the DNA of the club to help rebuild the club and bring them back to the winning ways.

Manchester United, is one of the great football club in the history of football and this amazing club have declined drastically following the retirement of the great Sir Alex Ferguson. Managers have come and go, players have been signed, many things have been put in place in an attempt to get the club back to its former glory. However, the return to dominance has not change but becomes worse.

In a recent interview, one of the club legend Cristiano Ronaldo, offered his insight into what could help Manchester United return to its winning ways: embracing its legendary figures.

Speaking on  Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Ronaldo emphasized the importance of bringing in former players who understand the club’s identity and culture. He suggested listening to the like of as Ruud van Nistelrooy, and also recruiting some of the ex players like Rio Ferdinand, and Roy Keane and that could  play a significant role in guiding Manchester United back to the top. According to Ronaldo, these individuals, who have experienced the club’s success first-hand, possess the knowledge and experience necessary to instill the right mentality in the dressing room.

Understanding the Dressing Room:

Ronaldo’s argument was  based on the fact that former players who knows Manchester United’s culture are the right people to help the club rebuild. He believes that these individuals have an understanding of what it means to wear the United shirt, the expectations of the fans, and the standards set by legendary managers like Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, a prolific striker for United between 2001 and 2006, is one of the former players Ronaldo praised. Van Nistelrooy’s experience as a player, coupled with his managerial roles since retiring, could offer invaluable insights into both player development and matchday tactics. His presence in Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff would bring a certain principles which external personnel will lack. He further stated that his experience of playing under Sir Alex Ferguson means he understands the level of discipline, hard work, and unity that was expected during one of the club’s most successful times.

Ronaldo’s point moved beyond tactical knowledge. It’s about understanding the mentality of the dressing room—a place where egos, pressure, and expectations all cross path. Former players like van Nistelrooy, Roy Keane, and Rio Ferdinand know what it takes to build this into the players because they have been their before and also they know what it means to motivate players and pass on the winning mentality to them has they have enjoyed in the time past.

The Importance of Club DNA

Sir Alex Ferguson, arguably one of the greatest in football history, he built Manchester United’s success on a strong foundation of discipline, hard work, and attacking football. His influence on the club’s identity not be left out. Ronaldo’s suggestion to bringing in former players in helping in the  rebuilding  is based on the belief that these individuals built with the DNA of Ferguson’s United.

Legends like Roy Keane, for example, were enforcers of Ferguson’s mentality on the pitch. Keane’s leadership, intensity, and no-nonsense attitude contains the spirit of Manchester United during their successful years. His influence in the dressing room was as important as any tactical adjustment. Similarly, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes represented the technical and tactical brilliance that made United such a dominant force, while Rio Ferdinand embodied the defensive strength that underpinned their success.

These figures understand the club’s values not only because they were successful players, but because they were part of a system that worked. They know how Manchester United became great, and this knowledge is critical for restoring the club’s former identity. As Ronaldo points out, relying solely on external professionals, who may lack this insider understanding, risks disconnecting the team from its roots.

Same Trends in Modern Football Management

In recent years, some clubs have adopted bringing in ex-players in to the coaching or managerial post and has drive them to success. One of the best team in Europa, Real Madrid brought in  Zinedine Zidane, who led the club to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles. This is a good example of how a former player can bring valuable insights to a managerial role. Barcelona has similarly turned to club legend Xavi, a player deeply connected to their identity, to drive them back to success.

Manchester United itself has seen positive results from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, during his time he brought back what has been missed in the past years as the Sir Alex Ferguson philosophy was seen in his game play. Although Solskjaer during his time he failed to deliver trophies to the cabinet of the club but the good sign was that the connection with the DNA was there and this was because he understands it.

The trend of involving ex-players in leadership roles isn’t unique to United. Across Europe, top clubs are realizing that players who understand the culture, values, and expectations of a club are essential for long-term success. By bringing in someone like van Nistelrooy, who knows what it means to be part of Manchester United’s storied history, the club can begin to bridge the gap between its glorious past and its present-day ambitions.

Cristiano Ronaldo has call on the hierarchy of club to look into bringing in the ex players of Manchester United, who can help the struggling team find its foot in the game and instill the winning mentality back into the dressing room .  If Erik ten Hag and the club’s leadership are serious about restoring the team to its former glory, listening to Ronaldo’s advice might just be the key to unlock the room of success.
