Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett Injures Shoulder in Preseason Loss

The New England Patriots’ preseason took a concerning turn as starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett injured his throwing shoulder during a 20-10 loss to the Washington Commanders, raising questions about the team’s quarterback depth heading into the regular season.

The New England Patriots faced a setback in their preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders as starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett sustained an injury to his throwing shoulder. The injury occurred during the first quarter when Brissett was sacked by Washington’s KJ Henry, who managed to break through the Patriots’ offensive line due to a blocking error. Henry’s full weight landed on Brissett’s right shoulder, causing the quarterback to grimace and clutch the front of his shoulder.

Despite the apparent discomfort, Brissett remained in the game, completing a short 6-yard pass on the next play and then delivering a deep throw to receiver K.J. Osborn, which was unfortunately dropped. Shortly after, Brissett was pulled from the game, in line with the team’s pre-game plan to allow rookie quarterback Drake Maye to gain more playing time.

Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, capitalized on his opportunity, completing 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. He also showcased his mobility with a 17-yard run that helped set up the team’s lone touchdown drive. However, questions remain about whether Maye is ready to take on a starting role if Brissett’s injury proves to be more significant than initially thought.

The Patriots’ offensive line struggled during the game, committing eight penalties, including several for incorrect alignment. These issues, combined with a bad shotgun snap and a botched center-quarterback exchange, could complicate the team’s decision-making process as they approach the final roster cuts. With Brissett’s status uncertain, the Patriots may have to consider their depth at quarterback, which also includes rookie Joe Milton III and third-year veteran Bailey Zappe, as they prepare for the upcoming season.
