Ralf Rangnick’s Remarkable Turnaround: From Manchester United laughing stock to Revitalizing Austria’s National Team

Ralf Rangnick’s departure from Manchester United over two years ago marked a low point in his managerial career. The 65-year-old German, who served as interim manager, struggled to deliver the desired results and performances at Old Trafford, facing a lack of respect from some players, including Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Rangnick’s fortunes have since changed dramatically, as evidenced by his recent success with Austria’s national team.

On Tuesday in Berlin, Rangnick’s Austria team delivered an impressive performance against the Netherlands, showcasing the skills that earned him the nickname ‘Godfather of the Gegenpress.’ The 3-2 victory secured Austria’s position at the top of a group that included France, highlighting Rangnick’s ability to inspire and lead his current squad.

Rangnick’s tenure with Austria began in April 2022, and while the initial results were mixed, the team gradually began to reflect his vision. Notable achievements under his leadership include victories over Italy and draws with Belgium and France. Austria’s preparation for Euro 2024 was marked by three wins in four games, and despite an early setback with an own goal against France, they rebounded with wins against Poland and the Netherlands.

The transformation of the Austrian team under Rangnick’s guidance has been remarkable. Previously known for a more passive and cautious approach, the team now plays with relentless energy and aggression. This new style has seen them press their opponents effectively and win back possession quickly, leaving their adversaries often exhausted. The statistics underscore Austria’s effectiveness, with Opta data revealing they are among the top pressing teams at Euro 2024. They have also committed the most fouls, underscoring their aggressive pursuit of the ball.

Tom Middler, host of the Austrian football podcast “The Other Bundesliga,” observed that this Austria team is a stark contrast to the one under Rangnick’s predecessor, Franco Foda. The players respect Rangnick and thrive under his leadership, finding his style closer to what they are accustomed to at their clubs. The meticulous organization and regimented approach in and out of possession have earned praise from observers, including former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock.

Rangnick’s success with Austria raises questions about his suitability for international football. With a long and varied club management career, including a stint with Manchester United, he rarely had longevity. However, his analytical approach seems well-suited to the international arena, where the infrequent schedule allows him time to refine his ideas and strategies. This was evident when he turned down an offer to return to club football with Bayern Munich before Euro 2024.

BBC Sport’s chief football news reporter, Simon Stone, noted that Rangnick’s tenure at Manchester United, though tumultuous, included accurate assessments of the club’s challenges. His “open heart surgery” comments about United’s state have proven prescient. In the context of international management, Rangnick’s analytical methods and strategic planning have found a perfect match with Austria, allowing him to excel and restore his reputation in the football world.
