Warriors Strategize to Retain Thompson Amid Stalled Negotiations
The Golden State Warriors are facing critical decisions as they navigate negotiations with Klay Thompson, with General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. making it clear: “We want him back.”
As free agency approaches and talks with Thompson stall, the Warriors are in a pivotal position to shape their roster for a return to championship contention or securing a playoff berth. However, Thompson’s contract situation presents a significant emotional challenge for the team, given his integral role in their success.
“I think being reasonable and rational, that’s always how I’m going to operate but to say about a guy like Klay Thompson, who’s meant so much to this franchise, to completely strip the emotion away from it, I think that’s almost impossible,” Dunleavy said, speaking at his pre-draft news conference Monday.
Negotiations under the new collective bargaining agreement have seen limited communication between the Warriors and Thompson, according to sources close to ESPN. While the decision ultimately lies with Thompson, sources indicate he intends to explore free agency options before making a final choice.
Dunleavy emphasized the importance of finding a solution that benefits both the franchise and Thompson’s role within the team structure. Meanwhile, the Warriors face another crucial decision regarding veteran guard Chris Paul, whose $30 million non-guaranteed salary for 2024-25 requires a verdict by Friday.
“I think it’s about what the right thing that works for the franchise and the player and the role he is in,” Dunleavy said. “Factoring all of those things in is what’s most important, and that’s what is taking place and what we’re looking at. … There are probably varying degrees of what that value is, but that’s on me to figure out what the right amount is for our team.
“We’re looking through everything,” Dunleavy said. “A lot of options are still on the table in terms of keeping Chris. Obviously there’s a scenario where he gets waived … but I’d say everything is open.”
With additional financial commitments, including Kevon Looney’s recently guaranteed $8 million, the Warriors’ payroll for the upcoming season stands at $175 million. Owner Joe Lacob has expressed a preference to avoid luxury tax implications, though Dunleavy acknowledged scenarios where exceeding financial thresholds may be necessary.
“It’s about being smart about it,” Dunleavy said. “It’s more like if there’s a point to go over the tax or one of the aprons, then we will do it. The most important thing to [Lacob] is winning. He’s shown that. You just have to be careful with the new rules.”
