Bruno Fernandes’ Gesture of Sportsmanship Hands Penalty Duties to Rashford in Victory Over Everton

Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, displayed a remarkable act of sportsmanship during their 3-0 triumph against Everton by passing on the penalty responsibilities to Marcus Rashford.

Despite the usual anticipation for Fernandes to take the spot-kick after Ashley Young fouled Anthony Martial, the Portugal international opted to hand the ball to Rashford, who confidently converted the penalty.

Fernandes, in his post-match statement, emphasized that it felt like the right and honorable decision to make, showcasing the team’s unity and respect among teammates.

“[I did it] because I felt Marcus [Rashford] needed a little bit of confidence, he needed his goal,” Bruno told Sky Sports.

“Marcus is an excellent penalty taker too, I am 100% sure he could score that penalty.

“It is not about who takes it, it is about scoring and Marcus did it perfectly.”

Bagging his second goal this season, fans are optimistic that his strike will serve as a significant morale lift.

Ahead of matches against Galatasaray and Newcastle within the next week, Fernandes expressed confidence in Marcus Rashford, believing the English forward can regain his form from last season when he scored an impressive 30 goals across all competitions.

“I think we all know strikers and wingers want to score goals, they need to score, that is part of their game,” added Fernandes.

“It gives you more of a boost and as you saw after the goal Marcus was unstoppable. He could take on everyone.

“Sometimes you need this opportunity to get your confidence back and Marcus has been great for us. Last year he was amazing so therefore everyone’s expectations for this season have been a lot higher.

“It is just about getting his goals back and everyone saying he is world class again.”
