Michael Carrick Keeps Fans Guessing as Manchester United Eye Last-Minute Transfers
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick is not ruling out late action in the transfer market, admitting that “we’ll have to wait and see” as the deadline quickly approaches.
United have already splashed over £150 million this summer to overhaul their midfield, bringing in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba. However, with the club still looking at options for a new left-back and the transfer window closing on Tuesday, Carrick is keeping his options open.
Speaking after United’s high-scoring 5-2 victory against Ipswich Town on Sunday, Carrick admitted that late deals are always unpredictable but insisted the club is in a good place.
“It’s always difficult to say, to be honest, when there’s so little time left,” Carrick told reporters. “I think the business that we’ve managed to do, I’m pleased with. I think we’re a better group, a better squad, potentially a better team. Adding Marcus Rashford into that feels like a new signing as well.”
He added: “We’re always open if there’s something else to add, so I wouldn’t shut that down, but as it stands, we’ll have to wait and see.”
The dominant win over Ipswich was a welcome relief for United following their shock opening-weekend defeat to Hull City.
Ipswich actually took a surprising early lead, but United responded emphatically. Bruno Fernandes delivered a masterclass with a brilliant hat-trick, while Harry Maguire and Bryan Mbeumo also got on the score sheet to seal the team’s first victory of the new campaign.
Carrick was particularly happy with how his side handled going behind early in the match.
“The biggest pleasing thing for me was dealing with setbacks,” Carrick explained. “We spoke about it during the week. There were a lot of highlights and a lot of really good football today, but I’m not getting carried away.”
With just hours left before the transfer window slams shut, United fans will be watching closely to see if the board delivers one final gift for Carrick’s squad.
