Former Manchester city winger Trevor Sinclair claims that the current Manchester United boss Ole Gunner Solskjaer deserves a new contract.

Despite not wining a single trophy at United in almost 2 and a half years Sinclair still believe the Norwegian has done a better job to earn him a contract.

United legend Gary Neville recently stated that former team-mate Solskjaer must win a trophy this season in order to remain at the club as the manager.

But former Man City winger Trevor Sinclair thinks it’s not always about trophies.

“I’m not sure we should take Gary Neville’s comments seriously,” Sinclair told talkSPORT Breakfast. “Richie Wellens just won Salford their first trophy and he’s been sacked literally the next day.

“It’s not all about trophies. We talk about Ole smiling, so what if he is smiling? I’d be smiling if I was on £7million a year at Manchester United.

“There’s different layers to Ole’s personality and he doesn’t have to show that to the media. The fact he doesn’t show that to the media is a good thing.

“I know he’s got a turn in him. You hear the stories, Michael Carrick is at the football club, and old team-mate of mine, he’s got the respect of the players.”

When asked if Solskjaer deserves a new contract, Sinclair said: “I think so. You look at the club he joined and the club they are now, the consistency has improved and there’s a togetherness in the squad.

“I’ve actually been to a few games at Old Trafford this season and I think they are playing incredibly well.

“You look in the league, second place, Leicester are breathing down their neck but they’ve got a great chance of finishing second and maybe putting a little bit of pressure on Man City.

“You look at the harmony of the players in the squad, you don’t seem to read about too many problems there, as you did with Jose Mourinho.

“He just doesn’t want to be nearly men. That’s why the jury is still out with the fans, he got so close last year and failed on too many occasions.

“If they can get over the line with the Europa, or get second place, I think the fans will be delighted.

Sinclair continued: “I know Ole, our kids went to the same school when I was at Manchester City. He came to a birthday party and he’s the most humble guy.

“Sometimes you don’t have to be that all inspiring manger, you can be a humble guy and the boys can buy into you.

“He’s got the respect of the players, he’s done everything as a player and the players have bought into him.

“I think he really deserves it.”
