Premier League club Aston Villa is set to sign Rangers and Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey.
The Times have claimed Steven Gerrard is set to raid his former club after the defender’s breakthrough season in which he starred in both the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals.
Bassey still has two years remaining on his deal at Rangers but his exploits have not gone unnoticed amongst Premier Clubs, with his old former manager Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa at the front of the queue.
On transfer business, the Villa manager said: “The tone was set in the previous window.
“We got superb backing from the owners, Christian [Purslow] and Johan [Lange] to help get those signings done.
“Again, straight away we’ve moved swiftly, we’ve moved quietly to try and get another big player in the door. To do that on day one of the off-season is a massive step. Now it’s time to push and move forward for the next piece of the jigsaw.”
Aston Villa suffered defeat in their last Premier League game after the jeopardize the 2-0 lead against Manchester City.
