Barcelona will not play at Camp Nou next season as the famous stadium gets much-needed facelift.

Spanish club Barcelona will not play at Camp Nou next season as the Catalan club plan for renovation next season.

The ground is one of the most renown in world football, but the Catalonia icon is looking tired.

Plans have been approved to redevelop the ground – not demolish it – and the surrounding area and facilities.

Barcelona will receive up to £1.3BILLION [€1.5bn] to fund the Camp Nou renovations, with US investment firms Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan expected to be the club’s main partners on the project.

It will be the first time the Nou Camp is not Barcelona’s hoe stadium since 1957, with the Spanish league leaders set to play at the Estadi Lluis Companys next season.

That stadium, located on the Montjuic hill to the southwest of the city, was built in 1927 originally for Barcelona’s bid for the 1936 Olympic games – but they were eventually awarded to Berlin.

It was renovated in 1989 to be the main stadium for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and is the city’s second largest stadium after the Nou Camp, and the sixth largest in Spain with a current capacity of around 55,000.
