Dani Alves Remains in Custody as Investigation into Sexual Assault Claim Continues
Dani Alves Remains in Custody Amidst Sexual Assault Investigation, Denial of Bail Raises Flight Risk Concerns.
Former Barcelona and Brazil full-back, Dani Alves, remains in custody as the investigation into a sexual assault claim against him continues.
The 40-year-old was arrested in January 2023 for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at a Barcelona nightclub on December 30, 2022. As a consequence of the accusation, Alves had his contract terminated with Mexican club Pumas UNAM and was denied bail, resulting in his imprisonment.
Despite repeated requests from Alves’ defense team to release him on bail during the ongoing investigation, the Barcelona court has consistently refused.
The latest refusal came last month after the defense presented footage showing alleged flirting between Alves and the accuser. However, the court dismissed this evidence, emphasizing that flirting should not “in any way justify an eventual sexual assault.”
The court considers Alves a flight risk, even though his defense has offered to surrender his passports and consent to a tracking device.
The claim that Alves and his family intended to live in Barcelona was also rejected by the court since it was discovered that his children had only recently been registered as residents.
Alves maintains his innocence, asserting that the encounter with the woman in question was consensual. No trial date has been announced yet, and Alves continues to await further proceedings while in custody.
