Darwin Nunez silently answering his critics
Darwin Nunez is quietly answering his critics with his scoring form this season, which is comparable to fellow Uruguayan star and Liverpool hero Luis Suarez.
Rival fans have considered Nunez an expensive flop following his £85million transfer from Benfica in the summer.
But, despite a host of missed chances and earning a reputation as an agent of chaos on the pitch, his numbers in his debut Premier League season point to a promising future for the 23-year-old.
Nunez is currently just two goals away from matching Suarez’s goal tally from his first full season at Anfield, and he’s already surpassed Sadio Mane’s record from his first campaign as a Red, and there are still eight games left to play this season.
Maybe don’t write off Darwin just yet – the player himself is certainly confident he can follow in Suarez’s footsteps and score goals for fun in a Liverpool shirt.
“Obviously, I still have many things to work on, for example my finishing,” Nunez told Sky Sports earlier this season. “But I think the same thing is happening to me as happened to Suarez. In his second year, he tore it up.
“Something similar happened to me already at Benfica. The first year went very badly for me and in the second, I exploded. Here, I think the same thing is happening. I hope next season will be like that. I’ll put my best forward and hopefully I’ll get a bit of luck.”
