Modric: Chelsea gave all but we believed
Luka Modric claims his side believed made them qualify for the semi final of the Champions League against a determined Chelsea side.
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric admits English club Chelsea gave their best in the return leg of the Champions League at Santiago Bernabeu.
The game became very tough for the Spanish side when Chelsea scored 3 goals in the regulated time of the match.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were determined in the game to qualify for the next round with their performance but unfortunately for them Real Madrid raised from the dead.
Substitute Rodrygo scored in the late minutes of the game after receiving an incredible pass from Luka Modric to move the game into an extra time.
“It was incredible. It was an amazing game here at the Bernabéu and a sweet defeat. We dug in, but we didn’t give up. We kept believing. Chelsea gave their all, but we kept believing and fighting to turn the score around. The coach made some good substitutions and they really helped us to change the feel of the game”.
The game was decided 30 minutes later after the normal 90 minutes in the game and the midfielder believed they were used to the kind of situation.
Modric claims he was comfortable at the holding midfield role as all of the Madrid players showed character in the game.
“We’ve become used to digging in, as we did against Bayern, Juventus and Ajax. It was important for us to get through and it’s difficult to put these emotions into words. We gave our all throughout the 120 minutes. The coach played me in the holding midfield role and I felt comfortable out there. All of our players showed a lot of character”.
Real Madrid will face the winner between Atletico Madrid and Manchester City in the Semi final of the game.
Speaking on potential opponent the midfielder believed they have to beat everybody to emerge the winner of the Champions League.
“If you want to win the Champions League you have to beat everybody. Both teams are strong and it’s important that we booked our place in the semi-finals. We’ll be watching tomorrow’s game and see who we’ll be playing”.
Real Madrid fans at the Bernabeu were the 12th man on the pitch against Chelsea as they cheer up the players although the game.
Modric says he was proud to hear the fans sing his name and hope he will always pay them back with his performance.
“It makes me extremely proud when I hear the fans singing my name. I’m thankful that they’ve gotten behind me from day one and I look to pay them back with my performance out on the pitch, looking to play well and win games. Let’s take it one year at a time and see how I feel”.
