Nigeria’s Victor Boniface is set to Miss Africa Cup of Nations Due to Injury

Nigeria’s national football team faces a setback ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations as striker Victor Boniface, a key player for Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, is expected to miss the tournament due to a groin injury sustained during training.

The 23-year-old, who has been in remarkable form with 10 goals in 16 league games this season, expressed his well-wishes to the team via social media, hinting at his absence from the upcoming event.

Boniface, who made his international debut in October and earned four caps since then, was sidelined for Nigeria’s final warm-up friendly against Guinea. Reports suggest he could be out for up to six weeks, putting his participation in doubt.

This adds to Nigeria’s injury concerns, as midfielder Wilfred Ndidi withdrew from the squad following an injury during Leicester City’s match on December 29.

Kelechi Iheanacho, another player from Leicester City, is also struggling with fitness issues, although the team remains hopeful of his recovery before the tournament kick-off.

Nigeria is set to commence their Africa Cup of Nations journey with a Group A clash against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, followed by matches against hosts Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau.

The absence of key players like Boniface and the fitness concerns surrounding others present a challenging scenario for the Super Eagles as they aim for success in the prestigious tournament.
