The Rise and Fall of Etim Esin: Nigeria’s “Maradona”

0 68

Etim John Esin, once heralded as one of Nigeria’s most prodigious football talents, experienced a career that was as turbulent as it was dazzling. Known as “Maradona” by the legendary radio commentator Ernest Okonkwo, Esin’s life on and off the pitch was marked by incredible skill, youthful years, and a series of controversial incidents that ultimately overshadowed his immense potential.

The Early Years and Youthful Enthusiasm

Esin’s football journey began in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, where his natural talent quickly set him apart. Playing for Oron Youngsters and then Calabar Rovers, his prowess on the field caught the eye of scouts and fans alike. By the age of 18, he had already achieved significant recognition, which was solidified when Iwuanyanwu Nationale presented him with a Peugeot 505. This early brush with fame, however, came with its own set of challenges. Without a manager or agent to guide him, Esin navigated the complexities of professional football alone, a factor that contributed to numerous mistakes and missteps.

 Domestic Achievement

Esin’s natural ability was undeniable, and he quickly rose to prominence in Nigerian football. As the top scorer for Flash Flamingoes, he attracted interest from the country’s leading clubs, including Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Leventis United, and Abiola Babes. His decision to join Iwuanyanwu Nationale, bolstered by their offer of a car, proved fruitful. Esin’s performances on the domestic stage were consistently impressive, earning him a spot on the national team and the admiration of fans across Nigeria.

European Career

Esin’s talent soon attracted European interest. In 1986, Belgian club AA Gent offered him a contract after witnessing his impressive performances during a tour in Nigeria. Unlike many players who had to undergo trials, Esin’s skills secured his move directly. This was a significant achievement, considering the limited number of Nigerian players in Europe at the time. Esin’s stint at Lokeren was particularly memorable, where he played alongside compatriot Peter Rufai and left an indelible mark with his performances.

The Gunshot Incident and the U-20 World Cup

A dramatic turn in Esin’s career came on the eve of the 1987 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. In a shocking incident, he was shot by robbers in Surulere, Lagos, after leaving the national team camp without authorization. Despite the severity of his injuries, Esin remarkably recovered in time to join the squad. However, the psychological impact on the team was profound. The media frenzy surrounding his recovery and inclusion created distractions and tensions within the team, which led to underperformance at the tournament. Esin later reflected that his inclusion, given the circumstances, may have destabilized the team’s dynamics.

Missed Opportunities in Major Competitions

Despite his talent, Esin was often unlucky when it came to major international tournaments. Although he earned six caps for the Super Eagles, he never played in the African Cup of Nations. In 1988, while at Lokeren, the club refused to release both him and teammate Samson Siasia for the tournament, retaining Esin and depriving him of the opportunity to shine on one of Africa’s biggest stages.

The Controversial Rape Case

One of the most significant controversies in Esin’s career was the rape accusation in Belgium. Involved with a 16-year-old girl, Esin claimed ignorance of her age and the legal implications. The girl’s father, who allegedly abused her himself, used the situation to accuse Esin, exploiting racial prejudices. This case highlighted the cultural and legal naivety many African players faced in Europe. Despite the severity of the accusation, Esin maintained his innocence, stating he was unaware of the girl’s age and the local laws regarding minors.

Conclusion

Etim Esin’s career was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, marked by extraordinary talent and troubling controversies. His experiences serve as a cautionary tale for young athletes navigating the pressures of fame and the complexities of international stardom. Today, Esin uses his story to educate and inspire the next generation, ensuring his legacy extends beyond his footballing achievements. His rise and fall underscore the challenges of early success and the crucial importance of guidance and support for young talents.
