Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Australian Open Due to Muscle Tear
Rafael Nadal, a 22-time major winner, has pulled out of the Australian Open just a week before the tournament’s commencement due to a newly discovered muscle tear.
After a year-long hiatus from the sport, Nadal had returned to competitive tennis but encountered concerns during the Brisbane International quarterfinals, where he experienced discomfort and required a medical timeout.
Initially perceived as a potential muscular issue rather than a recurrence of previous tendon problems, scans in Melbourne unveiled a small tear in a different muscle.
Nadal, expressing his disappointment on social media, clarified that the injury wasn’t in the same area as his prior troubles, presenting a silver lining amid the setback.
Acknowledging his unpreparedness to compete at the highest level, Nadal announced his return to Spain for further evaluation and treatment by his medical team.
This injury marks a setback in his comeback journey after undergoing hip surgery in June following a prolonged absence from the sport due to various health issues, including knee and foot problems.
Despite a promising start upon his return, securing victories in his initial matches, Nadal’s quarterfinal defeat and subsequent injury diagnosis have forced him to prioritize recovery.
His withdrawal from the Australian Open aims to ensure his readiness for the upcoming clay-court season and the renowned French Open, where he has clinched a record 14 titles.
The absence of the former world number one leaves a void in the Australian Open lineup, with current top-ranked player Novak Djokovic now considered the favorite to claim the tournament’s title.
Nadal expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete in Australia and remains optimistic about his recovery and performance in the forthcoming season, despite the disappointment of missing the Melbourne event.
