Pep Guardiola has signed a new two-year contract with Manchester City, extending his stay at the club until 2027, a decision influenced by the team’s recent struggles, including a rare four-game losing streak.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has signed a new two-year contract, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2027. The decision means Guardiola, 53, will spend more than a decade in charge of the club, having first arrived in Manchester in 2016.

The Spaniard, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest managers, has enjoyed unprecedented success with City, winning 18 trophies, including five Premier League titles and the coveted Champions League in 2023. However, his latest deal comes during a challenging period for the team, with City currently on a four-game losing streak—two defeats in the Premier League, one in the Champions League, and another in the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Guardiola cited these recent struggles as a significant factor in his decision to extend his tenure.

“Now I cannot leave,” Guardiola admitted. “Maybe the four defeats were the reason why I felt I cannot leave.”

Guardiola revealed he had been contemplating stepping down at the end of his current contract, which was set to expire on July 1, 2025. However, the team’s difficulties over the past month changed his perspective.

“Since the beginning of the season, I was thinking a lot about the moment,” he said. “I will be honest, I thought [this season] should be the last one. But the situation in the last month made me feel now is not the time to leave. I don’t want to let the club down.”

Guardiola emphasized the support he has received from the club’s leadership, particularly chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and director of football Txiki Begiristain, as a key factor in his decision to stay.

“I felt the confidence from the chairman, Txiki, and everyone, and I had the feeling I have to do it,” he explained.

Guardiola’s extension signals his commitment to steering Manchester City through their current struggles and continuing to build on his legacy. With the new deal, he will have the opportunity to bring further success to the club while solidifying his reputation as one of the most influential figures in City’s history.

The manager’s next challenge will be turning around the team’s recent dip in form, starting with their upcoming Premier League fixture as they aim to regain momentum in their pursuit of another league title.
