Liverpool’s Title Hopes Fade with Fourth Straight Defeat at Brentford

Liverpool title hope are in jeopardy following their defeat against Brentford making it their fourth straight loss in the Premier League

Liverpool’s Premier League title defense is unraveling after a 3-2 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday night, marking their fourth consecutive loss. Goals from Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade, and Igor Thiago secured the win for the hosts, leaving the Reds potentially seven points behind league leaders Arsenal by the weekend’s end.

Manager Arne Slot expressed his frustration, admitting he did not foresee the alarming dip in form. “Disappointing, again,” Slot said. “I was hoping for and expecting a better performance. It was far from what we are used to. Even when we have been losing, our performances were better than tonight.”

Despite a late rally with goals from Milos Kerkez and Mohamed Salah—who ended his recent goal drought—Liverpool’s defensive frailties were exposed once more. Slot highlighted a recurring issue, stating, “Teams seem to have a certain playing style against us, which is a very good strategy to play, and we haven’t found an answer yet. We simply concede too many goals.”

The Dutch manager also pointed to the significant squad changes over the summer as a contributing factor, though he was candid about the unexpected severity of the slump. “It definitely has to do with if you change quite a lot during the summer, then it’s not a surprise that it can go a bit like this. But I didn’t expect it to go with four losses in a row, let that be clear,” he added.

Liverpool’s struggles have raised questions about their ability to compete at the top, with Slot noting, “You cannot even compete, which we don’t do at the moment, because we concede too many goals.” As the Reds search for answers, their title hopes hang by a thread, with a challenging road ahead to regain their form and close the gap on the league leaders.
