Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender to hang up his boots at 30 following latest injury scare.

Borussia Dortmund center-back Niklas Süle has officially announced that he will retire from professional football at the conclusion of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.

The 30-year-old, whose contract was set to expire this summer, confirmed the decision following a significant injury scare during Dortmund’s recent 2-1 defeat to his former club, Hoffenheim. While clinical tests eventually cleared him of a third career ACL tear, the psychological and physical toll of the incident served as the final catalyst for his departure from the game.

The injury occurred last month, forcing Süle off the pitch after just 42 minutes. Speaking on the Spielmacher podcast, the towering defender detailed the emotional moment he realized his career was reaching its end.

Süle recounted the “drawer test” performed by team doctors in the dressing room—a clinical maneuver used to detect ligament instability—and the devastating realization when he felt no resistance in his knee.

“I went into the shower and cried for ten minutes,” Süle admitted. “In that moment, I really thought, ‘It’s torn.’ When I went for an MRI the next day and received the good news that it wasn’t an ACL injury, it was one thousand per cent clear to me that it was over.”

Having already endured two cruciate ligament ruptures during his career, Süle noted that the prospect of a third recovery process was a risk he was no longer willing to take. He emphasized a desire to prioritize his long-term mobility and family life over extending his playing days.

“I couldn’t imagine anything worse than looking forward to life—being independent, going on holiday, spending time with my children—only to then have to come to terms with my third cruciate ligament tear,” he explained.

Süle’s retirement marks the end of a highly decorated career in German football. A mainstay for the German national team, he was a vital part of the Bayern Munich era that dominated the Bundesliga, contributing to several of their league titles and their 2020 UEFA Champions League triumph before moving to Dortmund.

Ironically, the match that triggered his retirement decision also played a role in the title race, as Dortmund’s loss to Hoffenheim paved the way for Bayern Munich to secure their 35th Bundesliga title the following day.

Süle is expected to make his final appearance for Borussia Dortmund in the final matchday of the season, bringing a close to over a decade at the pinnacle of European football.
