Argentina Warns Fans Against Offensive Chants Ahead of Chile Match

The Argentina national team has urged fans to avoid offensive or discriminatory chants during their World Cup qualifying match against Chile, warning that such behavior could lead to FIFA sanctions, including reduced stadium capacity for future home games.

The Argentina national football team has issued a plea to its fans, urging them to refrain from using offensive or discriminatory chants during the upcoming World Cup CONMEBOL qualifying match against Chile.

The request comes in response to concerns about potential sanctions from FIFA, which could include a reduction in stadium capacity for Argentina’s next home game if such chants are heard during the match.

Argentina’s appeal to its supporters is particularly critical as the team prepares to face Chile at the Estadio Mâs Monumental on Thursday.

Should any anti-gay or racist chants be detected during the game, the penalty would affect the team’s October 15 qualifier against Bolivia in Buenos Aires.

This warning follows a recent controversy involving Argentine player Enzo Fernández, who posted a video of the team singing a discriminatory chant that targeted French players of African heritage after their 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa América final.
The video sparked widespread criticism and led to an investigation by Chelsea and FIFA, as well as a legal complaint from the French Football Federation.
Despite the backlash, the chant has gained traction among some Argentina fans, reappearing at various football matches across the country, including before the 2022 World Cup final against France.

As Argentina remains at the top of the CONMEBOL qualifying standings with 15 points from six matches, the team emphasizes the importance of supporting the players without resorting to discriminatory language.
They hope this appeal will prevent further controversy and ensure a positive atmosphere at upcoming matches.
