Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has agreed to a five-year, $314 million extension, the largest contract in NBA history, according to sources.

Jayson Tatum, the Boston Celtics’ star forward, has agreed to a historic five-year, $314 million contract extension, making it the largest deal in NBA history. The contract includes a player option and a trade kicker, enhancing Tatum’s flexibility and earning potential.

Tatum, 26, played a pivotal role in leading the Celtics to their 18th NBA championship with a dominant performance in the Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. Averaging 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game during the series, Tatum’s contributions were instrumental in Boston surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers for the most championships in league history.

Since being drafted third overall by the Celtics in 2017, Tatum has evolved into one of the NBA’s premier two-way players. His partnership with Jaylen Brown, who also signed a record extension last year, has formed a formidable wing duo, considered one of the best in the league. Together, they now hold the two richest contracts in NBA history by total value.

The Celtics further solidified their roster by extending guard Derrick White’s contract earlier in the day. This move ensures that every member of Boston’s starting lineup, including Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, remains under contract through at least the 2025-26 season. During that season alone, the combined salaries of Tatum, Brown, White, Holiday, and Porzingis will total $198.5 million.

Tatum’s accolades include being a five-time All-Star and a four-time All-NBA selection, with three consecutive first-team All-NBA honors. In addition to his NBA achievements, Tatum won a gold medal with Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He is also slated to represent the United States in the Paris Olympics this summer, as the men’s national team aims for its fifth consecutive gold medal.

Tatum’s record-breaking extension underscores his value to the Celtics and cements his status as one of the NBA’s elite players, ensuring that Boston remains a formidable contender in the years to come.
